One Month of Tracking Our Closet: Was It Actually Worth the Time?

After building our closet incrementally for a month, we wondered if 15 minutes a week was worth it. The answer surprised us.

A month ago, we decided to stop waiting for the perfect day to photograph our entire closet and just start adding items as we wore them. We wrote about how we're doing it, but the real question we had was simpler: is this actually worth our time?

We did the math.

The Time to Track: Real Numbers

Over the last month, we added about 50 items to our closet inventory. Not all 150 items we own — just the ones we were wearing regularly or thinking about.

Your Wardrobe By Numbers
Grab the item10 sec
Take one photo20 sec
Type name + color30 sec

That's about 1 minute per item, or 10–15 minutes per week for the 10–15 new items we added. For context, we spend more time choosing what to wear in the morning.

But Here's Where It Got Interesting

What took actual effort wasn't photographing or typing. It was what happened while we were doing it.

While we were adding items, we were noticing them. Thinking about why we reached for them. Realizing we had duplicates. Recognizing patterns in what we actually wear.

That's not extra time. That's the side effect of the time we were already spending.

The Realization We Weren't Expecting

After a month of incremental tracking, we could suddenly see which pieces were actually part of our rotation.

The jeans we wear 3× per week. The sweater that just sits there. The vintage piece we bought that we've only worn once, despite thinking we loved it.

Then we calculated something we'd never calculated before: cost per wear.

The payoff, one month later
  • Items tracked: 50
  • Items in heavy rotation: ~12–15
  • Items we'd forgotten about: 3
  • Hours spent tracking: ~1 total
  • Money potentially wasted (calculated): €200–€400
  • Savings from knowing this: significant

We thought we'd need a fancy system to gather that data. Turns out, just paying attention while photographing does it automatically.

The Real Barrier Isn't Time

Here's the thing nobody mentions: the time commitment isn't actually the barrier. Staying consistent is.

It's easy to track something for two weeks and then get busy. It's easy to skip a week, feel like you've "fallen behind," and quit entirely.

The time is small. The discipline to show up every week? That's the real ask.

But here's the good news: if you can show up for 15 minutes, the momentum carries you. It becomes part of your routine. You stop having to think about it.

After one month of incremental tracking, we could finally see which pieces we actually wear versus which ones we think we love.

Is It Worth the Effort?

That depends on what you want to know.

If you want to stop buying duplicates: yes. Fifteen minutes a week is nothing compared to the money you'll save from not buying that third black sweater you didn't know you had.

If you want to understand your actual style: yes. Seeing which pieces you reach for repeatedly tells you more than any style quiz.

If you want to make peace with your closet: maybe. It depends on whether you're ready to be honest about the pieces that don't work out.

If you want a perfect catalog: probably not. That takes the five-hour weekend approach, and honestly, you'll get bored with it.

Did you know?

The average person spends 2–3 hours a week deciding what to wear. Tracking your closet for 15 minutes a week means you spend that time knowing what you have instead of searching for it.
